Columbus had once hoped to adapt ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ into a film, possibly reuniting the original trio as adults. But now, he feels that dream is over.

Imagine this: The grand hall of Hogwarts ablaze with light, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint again gathered at the long wooden tables, laughing and joking. For enthusiasts, a reunion of the original Harry Potter cast has always seemed like a dream waiting to be realized. But director Chris Columbus, who directed the first two movies, says this dream may never become reality.

Columbus, who gave us the magical world of ‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone’ and ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets’, recently revealed why a reunion or film adaptation of the stage play ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ is unlikely.

And the reason has nothing to do with film-making challenges. It’s because of the storm surrounding author JK Rowling’s views on trans rights.

“It’s all become so complicated with all the political business,” confessed Columbus during an interview with The Times. He mentioned that while J.K. Rowling, the creator of the Harry Potter world, is of one view, most of the cast, including Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, are firmly on the other side.

That disagreement, he continued, means any type of reunion is out of the question.

The rift started when Rowling gave a number of contentious statements on gender identity and trans issues in recent years.

Daniel Radcliffe, in 2020, penned an essay for ‘The Trevor Project’, issuing an apology to fans for Rowling’s statements. He reaffirmed his complete support for the trans community and explained that all human beings are entitled to respect and dignity.

Emma Watson also weighed in, sharing on social media: “I want my trans followers to know that I and so many other people around the globe see you, respect you, and love you for who you are.”

During the 2022 BAFTA Awards, Watson seemed to quietly speak out against Rowling once again, saying to the crowd, “I’m here for all the witches.”

Most took that as a stinging rebuke, indicating she was standing in support of trans individuals.

Rowling remained resolute. She said she would not apologize to the actors for criticizing her and instructed them to “save their apologies.”.
